[Install] Custom ROM For AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 (SII) Skyrocket i727 – Sky Ice Cream Sandwich ICS ROM; CIQ Removed Short Review & How To Instructions

WARNING…if you’re a newbie and you mess up your phone don’t blame anyone but yourself for not knowing what you’re doing. I will provide exact instructions and if you follow them you you should be good. There’s always a chance you flashing this new rom could go wrong. I warned you. Below is a picture of my phone running Sky Ice Cream Sandwich which is a 2.3.5/6 based rom with CIQ Removed. You must have a rooted phone first. I’ll assume you don’t.
————————————————
THESE ARE STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEWBIES. Updated 1/7/12
IF YOU HAVE DONE THIS BEFORE AND KNOW WHAT YOU’RE DOING THEN I’VE PROVIDED SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS BELOW. FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS IF YOU’RE NEW. IF YOU’VE DONE THIS BEFORE, SCROLL AFTER THE REVIEW AND GO TO THE ADVANCED USER INSTRUCTIONS.
————————————————

I recommend making sure your phone is on a full charge or almost full battery when installing custom roms.
I use the following ROM: SkyRocket Ice Cream Sandwich created by seanzscreams.
Why: It’s stable enough for me. GPS works, includes BLN support (Back Light Notification) so your bottom buttons will flash as an indicator if you have a text, message, missed call. Really cool, search for BLN in the market after you’re done will my instructions!!
If you do have a rooted Skyrocket then skip step one and go to step number two.

Step 1 ) Root your phone with my instructions HERE.

icsthemed [Install] Custom ROM For AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 (SII) Skyrocket i727 Sky Ice Cream Sandwich ICS ROM; CIQ Removed Short Review & How To Instructions

Step 2 ) Go to HERE and download the latest version of the Release Candidate. They typically call it RC*.* FULL WIPE.
What you need to download to your computer is located under the words “SKY ICE CREAM SANDWICH”. There’s typically a RC*.* NONWIPE UPDATE. You will need to download it depending on your Camera working or not.

Currently I have RC6FULL WIPE and then the RC6.2 (nonwipe UPDATE) install second . These file names will change daily so check the link above. It won’t always be RC6 or 6.2. Please remember that. Once you have downloaded those two files remember where you put them on your computer because we need to put these on your phone very soon. Remember where you placed them on your computer

IMPORTANT: Take a mental note and remember which one was the BIGGER FILE (The RC*FULL WIPE will be bigger) and which one was the smaller one (6.2 or the nonwipe update) because you need to install the BIGGER FILE first and the smaller one second later on.

Step 3 ) Now we will put your phone in USB mass storage mode so we can copy the two above files to your phone’s internal SD card.
First plug your USB cable into your computer’s USB port only; just the computer.
Second, on your phone press the menu button (button left) > Settings > Wireless and Network > USB utilities and click Connect storage to PC button.
Third, it will say Connect USB cable to use mass storage. Now, plug in your USB cable to your phone.
Fourth, click Connect USB storage and click OK.
Fifth, your Windows 7 (what I have) computer will bring up to AutoPlay windows, at the bottom of the screen. You can open both but I typically put the files on the Removable Disk.
Sixth, locate those two above files that you downloaded. Copy and paste them or move them anywhere onto your Removable Disk aka Internal SD card. It’s up to you to realize if you moved these files to your EXTERNAL SD card or the Removable Disk. I will proceed with instructions based off your Removable Disk or Internal SD Card.
Seventh, did you copy them over? If so, unplug your phone and go to step number four.

Step 4 ) This step four is simply to let you get into recovery mode. If you have the function to press and hold your power button and go into recovery then skip this step.

If not then, go to the market and download ROM Manager on your phone.

First, Open ROM Manager on your phone, press okay or whatever it tells you to do.
Second and MOST IMPORTANT, At the top of your phone click Flash ClockwordMod Recovery and then press Samsung T-Mobile GalaxyS2. Yes press Samsung T-Mobile GalaxyS2, I know your phone is probably an AT&T model. I recommend you’re on wifi so it can do it’s thing quicker but this must complete first.
Third, After you have flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, now I want you to click Reboot into Recovery.
Fourth, ROM Manager and/or your phone’s Super User app may ask for permission, say Yes or OK if it asks. If it ask again say OK or yes. Let your phone reboot.

Step 5 ) You will see a black screen with blue text and/or a screen that says ClockworkMod Recovery v*.*.*.*. Don’t be scared this is a good thing.

First, select wipe data/factory reset and scroll down to Yes –delete all user data and select it with your power. Go Back and do this 3 times. Then go back to the main menu after its done. Wipe battery stats under the Advanced tab (it’s optional)
Go Back, Go to Advanced and wipe Davik cache 3 times. Go back You should be back to the main ClockworkMod Recovery screen/menu.

Then go to Mounts & Storage and format /system , then when that’s done, format / data , and when that’s done format cache. Go back to main menu.

Step 6 ) Use the volume buttons and select “install zip from sdcard.” Press the power button to select.

Next: Go to “choose zip from internal sdcard” if you did what I said and put the two files you downloaded on your Removable Disk or Internal SD Card.
Or: Go to “choose zip from sdcard” if you put them on the EXTERNAL SD.

Now, scroll down using your menu buttons and select the main .zip file. It should be the RC* FULLWIPE. Mine was called skyrocketSZ-RC6.zip and yours may have differnt RC*.zip numbers and letters but make sure you select the BIGGER FILE. I asked you to remember or write it down in step two above. So you’re going to select it and scroll down to “Yes- Install …………zip” and press the power button to select it. Wait. Screen should say install sdcard complete.

Next, Once you’re done installing it in step 6, then you’re going to go back to the main ClockworkMod Recovery screen/menu.

Step 7 ) Use your volume buttons and press down to select “wipe cache partition.” We’ve already done this but it’s necessary to do it again. Press the Power button on the right of your phone to select it. Scroll down to Yes – Wipe Cache and press the power button to select it.

Now, go Back to the main menu and lets lets install the second or smaller NONWIPE UPDATE file!!!!

step 8 ) As stated above, it’s time to install the smaller file or the NONWIPE UPDATE file. Mine was called skyicecreamSZ+RC6.2.zip , but yours may be different because the numbers 6.2 will change over time and increase.

You should be at the main menu in ClockworkMod. If so, use the volume buttons and select “install zip from sdcard.” Press the power button to select.

Next: Go to “choose zip from internal sdcard” if you did what I said and put the two files you downloaded on your Removable Disk or Internal SD Card.
Or: Go to “choose zip from sdcard” if you put them on the EXTERNAL SD.

Now, scroll down using your menu buttons and select the file skyicecreamSZ+RC6.2.zip .Remember skyicecreamSZ+RC6.2.zip could be named something else because the numbers 6.2 will change over time…Whatever the name of that file is, select it using your volume buttons and then press the power to install it. Let it do it’s thing.

Step 9 ) Once you’ve install the final file in ClockworkMod, ++++go back++++ to the main menu and Reboot system now. The option should be at the top. To select it, use your volume buttons and then use your power button to select the option to reboot phone.

Step 10 ) Your phone will reboot and you’ll see a bunch of shapes and colors and a really cool looking animation for 14-16 seconds; varies. It may also make sounds. Let it do it’s thing and don’t interrupt it. LET THE PHONE REBOOT AND START UP FULLY.

Now, if you don’t have a cell phone signal, it’s okay. This happens to me. This is because we need to fix permissions with ROM MANAGER.

Step 11 ) First turn on your Wifi in your settings and connect to your home network or any wireless network.
Open your apps, find the Market app, should be on the home screen.
You will need to sign up with your Google Account. Now go to the market on your phone and download ROM MANAGER. Open the program after install. At the top of your phone click Flash ClockwordMod Recovery and then press Samsung T-Mobile GalaxyS2. Yes press Samsung T-Mobile GalaxyS2, I know your phone is probably an AT&T model. I recommend you’re on wifi so it can do it’s thing quicker but this must complete first. After you have flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, now I want you to scroll down and select Fix Permissions.

Agree to everything and say Yes Yes or OK. If Super User pops up, say yes. Let it do its thing. Reboot your phone afterwards. You will now have a signal. Select the ICS Launcher if it asks you or whatever one you want.

CONGRATS YOU NOW HAVE AN AT&T SAMSUNG GALAXY S2 SKYROCKET MINUS ALL THE BLOATWARE AND CARRIER IQ (CIQ) IS GONE!!!!!

REVIEW IS BELOW
————————————————

This ROM is so far stable and most of everything works. I’ve been using this ROM for some time and I love it. You will experience battery drain issues typically but you have to use it for several days or even a week. I recommend you charge up your phone fully and recalibrate the battery using this app HERE. You must note that these custom roms are always a work in progress so don’t complain if something doesn’t work off the bat. They are constantly being updated. To keep up I recommend that you save this page HERE and keep up with the NONWIPE UPDATE files on a daily or weekly basis. [How To] Fix Your Device Is Not Compatible With This Item In Android App Market – Galaxy S II, Skyrocket, Etc

Did you try and download an app from the Android Market and you got the following message…”Your Device Is Not Compatible With This Item”? Probably did. There are 3 methods to fixing this. Let me provide you with the most common fix for this. I’ve provided a screenshot below.

wpid SC20111217 152033 [How To] Fix Your Device Is Not Compatible With This Item In Android App Market Galaxy S II, Skyrocket, Etc

Method 1. Go to your Menu button > Settings > Applications > Manage applications > Press All > and then scroll down to Market. Press clear cache first and then clear data second. If you clear data it will clear cache but the first way is my method. Reopen the market.

Method 2. If you have a custom rom this is most likely your fix. This fix involves the program LCD Density. If LCD Density is set to something other than the norm. I recommend you set your LCD Density to 240 or back to the norm. The nook is 160 I believe if you’re using a nook. If you’re using an Android phone like on my Skyrocket, then set it to 240 and then press KillAll and let it do its thing. Make sure you give it permissions when SuperUser asks. I set mine to 200 and 220 and some programs in the market won’t download so I recommend, depends on your phone setting the density to 240, download the program and then set it back to your preferred density setting.

Method 3. Like above, if you have a custom rom like CM7 or some other rom I would recommend doing the above as well but also try this. Download MarketEnabler from HERE. Go to the settings list and long-press Verizon [us] and then fake this provider now. You can try T-Mobile if you want. Reopen the market and try and download your program.

The first method is recommended for everyone if you’re going to a different rom and I recommend the method 2 and 3 if you’ve flashed a custom image or rom on your Android device.

[Quick Review] CyanogenMod 7 ROM For Samsung Galaxy S2 v7. 1.0

So it’s time for a small review of my absolute favorite ROM for Android phones; CyanogenMod. CyanogenMod is comprised of a community of contributors who tirelessly take the Android platform and turn it into what’s it’s meant to be. CyanogenMod 7 based off Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) for the AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 is light-years ahead of a regular AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 that most people have. Now I’m NOT referring to the Nightlies, I’m referring to the stable ROM v7. 1.0 HERE or HERE. Here are my instructions on how to install CM7 but first take a look at this store review. I’ve discovered the following…

The Pros:
No AT&T applications or processes running in the background.
Better battery life. I can confirm this.
Light sensor isn’t as aggressive.
The phone is more smooth and its still fast.
There are tons of options, like moving your task bar to the bottom (look in pictures) and you can change themes as well.
More functionality to customize phone and make it unique.

Installing CyanogenMod 7 isn’t for newbies because I ran into several programs but if you know what you’re doing I recommend it. The only drawback is that the gallery is kind of slow but that will soon be fixed and I’m using QuickPic as an alternative. Another feature I like is the unlock screen and the tv like effect when you turn on/off the phone. CM7 as I now call it does an excellent job of managing system resources as well.

There are other alternatives like Cognition, but CM7 works and I’m not looking back. I’m elated that they’re placed the sound button back on the menu unlike the stock operating system that comes with the phone. There’s what works just so you know, battery works CHECK, gps CHECK, sounds CHECK, inbound/outbound calls CHECK, bluetooth CHECK, NFC coming soon but the options is there, wifi CHECK, proximity sensor CHECK, notifications CHECK, wifi tethering CHECK, speaker quality CHECK. CM7 also comes with a nice DSP Manager to equalize your headset and speaker phone settings.

wpid shot 000007 [Quick Review] CyanogenMod 7 ROM For Samsung Galaxy S2 v7. 1.0

If you’re wondering how I got my screen to look like the snapshots above take note of the following. I’m running GoLauncher with Multicon widgets, Google Mail widget (paid version), LCD Density set to 200 so my resolution looks more crisp, and I’ve set my grid in GoLaunch to 7X6 so I can fit more on the screen. The background is actually a live wallpaper and I’m using Super Clock Wallpaper Light. All these programs can be found in the appstore. So, I haven’t compromised any functionality when flashing CyanogenMod 7 to my AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 II.

Cons: Small drawbacks that I can live with are the gallery, browser froze a few times but not often, the camera app isn’t as user friendly as the stock camera app. I’m not sure if I can blame this on CM7 or not.

Either way I’m satisfied and if you want to put CM7 on your AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 II, then check out my instructions HERE. I am NOT responsible if you brick your phone. You can contact me if you want but I get a lot of emails.
